Liberia Airport to Tamarindo: The Complete Transfer Guide

Tamarindo beach at golden hour, Guanacaste Costa Rica

Tamarindo is one of Costa Rica's most popular beach destinations — and one of the easiest to reach from Liberia Airport (LIR). Here's everything you need to know before you arrive.

The Route

From Liberia Airport, the drive to Tamarindo takes approximately 1 hour to 1 hour 15 minutes under normal traffic conditions. The route follows the Interamerican Highway (Route 1) south for about 20 kilometers, then turns west toward the coast on a well-paved road that runs through Belén and Huacas before arriving in Tamarindo.

The road is paved the entire way. No 4WD required. No river crossings. This is one of the most straightforward transfers in Guanacaste.

Total distance: ~82 kilometers

What the Arrival Experience Looks Like

When your flight lands at LIR, you'll clear immigration and customs (typically 20–40 minutes), collect your bags, and walk through the arrivals exit into the main terminal. Your Pura Shuttle driver will be waiting in the arrivals area holding a sign with your name.

Your bags go in the van, you get in, and you're in Tamarindo in about an hour. No negotiations, no looking for taxis, no waiting for a van to fill with other passengers.

About Tamarindo

Tamarindo is a lively surf town on Guanacaste's Pacific coast. It's one of the few beach towns in Costa Rica with a developed infrastructure — good restaurants, beach clubs, surf schools, yoga studios, a supermarket, ATMs, and reliable WiFi. It attracts a mix of surfers, families, honeymooners, and digital nomads.

The town sits on a wide, crescent-shaped bay with consistent surf on the main beach and calmer water at the estuary end. Tamarindo is also a jumping-off point for day trips to Playa Grande (nesting leatherback turtles), Playa Avellanas, and Witch's Rock.

Best time to visit: December through April for guaranteed sunshine. May through November (green season) brings afternoon rain but lush scenery, fewer crowds, and lower hotel rates.
