Tamarindo to Arenal Volcano: The Complete Transfer Guide

Moving from Guanacaste's beaches to Arenal Volcano is one of the great Costa Rica itinerary combinations — sun and surf followed by jungle, hot springs, and an active volcano. Here's everything you need to know about the transfer.
The Route
From Tamarindo, the drive to La Fortuna (the town at the base of Arenal Volcano) takes approximately 3.5 to 4 hours on fully paved roads.
The route heads east through Guanacaste, joins the Interamerican Highway at Cañas, then turns south and east toward the Arenal region. As you cross the highlands, the terrain shifts dramatically — from Guanacaste's dry tropical savanna to lush rainforest. About 30 minutes from La Fortuna, the route passes alongside Lake Arenal, a vast reservoir with Arenal Volcano rising from the far shore. On a clear day, this stretch of road delivers one of the most memorable views in Costa Rica.

From Flamingo: The drive is similar — approximately 3.5 hours via the same route through Cañas.
From Papagayo: Slightly shorter — around 3 hours, since the Papagayo Peninsula is already closer to the highway.
What to Do in La Fortuna / Arenal
La Fortuna is one of the most activity-rich destinations in Costa Rica:
- Hot Springs: The volcanic heat warms natural and resort hot spring pools throughout the area. Tabacón Grand Spa is the best-known; there's also a free natural hot spring river accessible to the public.
- La Fortuna Waterfall: A 70-meter cascade through the rainforest, accessible via a steep but rewarding trail. One of the most photographed spots in the country.
- Arenal Volcano National Park: Hiking trails through lava fields and rainforest with volcano views. On clear days (most common in the morning), the summit is dramatic.
- Lake Arenal: Kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding, windsurfing, and boat tours on one of Costa Rica's largest lakes.
- White-water Rafting: The Toro and Sarapiquí rivers offer Class III–IV rapids within 30–45 minutes of La Fortuna.
